Message As I recall, Chris has a dual electric fan setup on his car. Everytime the fans would kick on, the engine idle dropped and occasionally wanted to stumble. These fans are on a fused circuit with a thermocouple controller with a 20A fuse. It blew that fuse 3 times while on the dyno. One thing to also keep in mind is that at WOT, the ECU disengages the alternator's charging circuit. What I believe is going on is that these electric fans are running and pulling significant amounts of power from the rest of the car (i.e. fuel pump) and causing the system to run lean. This would also account for the car wanting to buck and surge while going down the track as those runs are quite a bit longer than a dyno-pull. The fuel pump likely isn't getting the power it needs.

I have recommended to Chris to remove the electric fans and install the mechanical fan back on the car and then see how it performs. My money is on this as the issue. It will likely require re-tuning once the electric fans have been removed.

I will be making an addendum to my Dyno dissertation post which will point out the fact about the alternator not providing charge to the battery while at WOT will give you lots of problems if you have a weak battery or excessive electrical loads within the vehicle.

My #1 rule for the day: Got electric fans? KICK THEM TO THE CURB.
